French maritime authorities said the fire started in the vessel’s engine and spread rapidly, making intervention by the French and British coast guards necessary.
Emergency teams managed to rescue a total of 157 people, while five others had been taken off the boat on Monday night.
The boat had departed from an area near Boulogne-sur-Mer. Due to the high risks associated with illegal crossings of the English Channel, its movement was being monitored by the authorities.
Data from the Migration Observatory show that 162 people lost their lives between 2018 and 2025 while attempting to cross the Channel in migrant boats.
No fatalities were reported in the latest incident. The authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.
