Delta said that Flight 1076, operating on the Atlanta–Chicago route, completed its landing normally and there was no need for an emergency landing. The company clarified that no passengers or crew members were injured.
“Delta Flight 1076 from Atlanta (ATL) to Chicago (MDW) is believed to have come into contact with fireworks during descent. The aircraft landed safely and then proceeded to the terminal gate,” a company spokesperson said.
After arriving at the airport, the aircraft was temporarily removed from the flight schedule to undergo detailed technical inspections, in order to verify whether it had sustained any damage.
Flight data show that the aircraft took off from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta at 19:36 local time and arrived at Chicago Midway Airport at 20:38.
The incident can also be heard in a recording of the communication between the pilot and the air traffic control tower.
“A firework just struck our aircraft. We heard a very loud bang and the aircraft needs to be checked as soon as we get to the gate. We hope it was only a firework that exploded beneath us, but the impact was strong,” he said.
