Bekim Sejdiu: My name is being discussed again for president, but I am not part of the process

Bekim Sejdiu has once again clarified his position on the inclusion of his name in political discussions over the election of Kosovo’s president, precisely on the day the constitutional deadline for choosing the head of state expires.

Sejdiu recalled that on September 14 he announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. According to him, the decision came after an agreement between the LDK and LVV, the two parties that had nominated and supported him for the post, failed to materialize.

He explained that the failure to reach an agreement was linked to the position of two other opposition parties and six LDK lawmakers.

Despite his previously announced withdrawal, his name has returned to discussions on finding a candidate for president.

“Recently, my name has once again been included in discussions on finding a candidate for president of the country,” Sejdiu said.

However, he made clear that he does not see himself as part of the current process, since there is no political agreement and the necessary support in the Assembly has not been secured.

Sejdiu said he had informed the LDK leadership and Prime Minister Albin Kurti of this position.

He said that in recent days he had been in constant communication with LDK leaders, as the party was the first to invite him and offer him the presidency at the beginning of September.

Sejdiu stressed that he accepted the candidacy solely out of concern for the country and a desire to contribute to overcoming the institutional crisis.

He thanked Prime Minister Albin Kurti and LDK Chairman Lumir Abdixhiku for their trust and professionalism during their communication. He also expressed gratitude to politicians from other parties who have continued to consider him a suitable candidate for head of state.

Sejdiu also praised the support he received from colleagues, friends, members of the academic community and others.

His reaction came on October 6, the date that the Constitutional Court set as the end of the 60-day deadline for electing the president.

Although he withdrew on September 14, Sejdiu’s name continued to circulate in political discussions. On September 30, Prime Minister Kurti said that the LVV still considered Sejdiu its candidate, despite the announcement of his withdrawal.

In the end, Sejdiu expressed concern over the political situation and the anxiety and disappointment that, according to him, the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo are experiencing.

He called on everyone to use this situation as a moment for reflection, beyond narrow resentments and personal interests.
