Protesters call for approval of the law on the Special Court: It is not a partisan issue

The protest held today in front of the Kosovo Assembly is continuing on the day the deadline for electing the president expires. Since the morning hours, citizens have been calling for the draft law amending and supplementing the law on the Special Court to be processed in its second reading.

According to the protesters, lawmakers should consider voting on the law a priority and approve it, regardless of other political developments.

Azem Gashi told KosovaPress that the protest was taking place peacefully and that each participant was expressing their own conviction about what should happen.

Gashi: The decision against former KLA leaders is unacceptable

“The situation at the protest is very good, the situation is calm, the people are protesting, each in their own way. This is very painful, a terrible wound, with a head of state being held in prison… This is a terrible tragedy for Kosovo, for our homeland,” Gashi said.

Gashi, who had also taken part in last night’s protest, said that the confrontation that occurred then was unnecessary.

Gashi: The clash between police and protesters could have been avoided

“Last night’s protest was very bad. There was no need for it to come to a clash between the police and the protesters, because the protesters should know that the police are ours,” Gashi said.

He called on lawmakers to remain united and stressed that voting on the law should not be questioned, as the aim is to secure the release of the former KLA leaders.

Gashi: Citizens must remain united

“I call on everyone to remain united to free these young men from a notorious prison,” Gashi said.

Musli Serdolli, who had traveled from Gjilan to take part in the protest, held Minister Xhelal Sveçla responsible for the confrontation the previous night.

Serdolli: Sveçla is using the Kosovo Police

“I watched it with regret and was very emotional, because the minister sentenced to one year in prison, Xhelal Sveçla, is now exploiting the Kosovo Police. He should not have used the police against his own brothers,” Serdolli said.

Meanwhile, Afrim Fejzullahu said that approval of the law should not be opposed because, in his view, it is in Kosovo’s best interest.

Fejzullahu: This is a national law

“The law is national, it is not partisan, it is not for bargaining, and a condition should not be placed on voting for the president, since that is a separate issue and can also be voted on later,” Fejzullahu concluded.

The protest in support of the former KLA leaders escalated last night after the draft law amending and supplementing the law on the Special Court was not put to a second reading. The gathering continued today and was, for the most part, peaceful.
