At a time when the news, information and content we consume every day are increasingly accessed through phone or computer screens, only a very small share of Albanians go one step further and check whether what they read online is true.

Only 14.34% of individuals in Albania aged 16–74 tried to verify the accuracy of the information or content they found online by using other sources, according to a Eurostat report on the assessment of digital data, information and content.
This places Albania among the countries with the lowest percentages in Europe and far below the European Union average of 29.16%.
Albania ranks third from last in Europe on this indicator. Even lower percentages were recorded in Greece, at 9.78%, and Serbia, at 11.13%.
Albania is followed by Lithuania at 14.92%, Turkey at 16.93%, Bosnia and Herzegovina at 18.02%, and Romania at 18.19%.
In the Western Balkans, individuals in Montenegro recorded a slightly higher rate of information verification, at 21.43%. Individuals in North Macedonia are the most skeptical of online news in the region, with 24.22% verifying the information.
At the other end of the table are countries where online information verification is much more widespread. Ireland leads with 63.64%, followed by the Netherlands with 53.06% and Luxembourg with 45.24%. Sweden recorded 44.61%, Finland 39.60%, and Belgium 36.25%.
Overall, around 3 in 10 people in the EU verified the accuracy of information or content they found online in 2025. Eurostat measures this indicator through its survey on individuals’ use of information and communication technologies.
According to the European Commission’s Eurobarometer, in an environment where online information has become part of everyday life, the risk of encountering false or manipulative content is growing.
The same report found that 66% of Europeans say they have encountered disinformation or fake news at least occasionally, while 82% consider false information or information that distorts reality to be a problem for democracy./Monitor
