Clayton, who took over as head of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in August, will lead a task force expected to submit a report within 120 days on the opportunities and risks associated with the development of AI, the Wall Street Journal reported.
He has called the body the “Super Intelligence Force,” explaining that its goal is to preserve the United States’ edge in the development of artificial intelligence while protecting American interests.
According to Clayton, the U.S. faces a major risk if it fails to become the leading country in the development of advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
One of the task force’s responsibilities will also be to draft proposals for addressing the threats AI could pose to society. However, the Trump administration wants to avoid excessive rules and what it calls “regulatory capture,” as these could hinder innovation and competition.
Officials cited by the Wall Street Journal said that managing most of the risks associated with artificial intelligence is expected to be left to the industry. The government, meanwhile, will cooperate with companies operating in the field.
AI safety has assumed an increasingly important place in the public debate in the United States. Some researchers have warned of the potential consequences of developing increasingly advanced technologies, while Democratic and Republican lawmakers have called for action.
Trump has expressed skepticism about stringent regulation of artificial intelligence. In his view, excessive oversight could undermine the U.S. ability to compete with China in this strategic sector.
The working group is also expected to include Vice President J.D. Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
