October 6 is considered a crucial date for the country’s institutions, because the expiry of this deadline would create a new political and institutional situation. Under these circumstances, the political forces are seeking a solution through dialogue, with the aim of completing the election of the head of state within the prescribed period.

Following a government meeting, acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti spoke about the possibility of a new agreement between the parties. He stressed that new meetings and negotiations are needed and that Kosovo does not need another institutional destabilization.

Kurti highlighted the previous political agreement, which received 99 votes, saying that such an agreement could be reached again.

He said there must be meetings, discussions and reconciliation, adding that he considers this path possible and that there is a direction in which they can move forward together.

Regarding the presidential candidacy, Kurti said that the Vetëvendosje Movement continues to adhere to the political agreement and to the candidacy of Bekim Sejdiu.

According to him, Sejdiu withdrew from the race after six LDK deputies failed to implement the agreement reached between the political entities.

He said that the Vetëvendosje Movement has a political agreement and believes it must be respected, adding that they have no new or alternative name.

However, he did not rule out the possibility that another presidential candidate could be proposed in the future, which would be communicated to the public.

In this context, political science professor Nexhmedin Spahiu assesses that the political parties currently do not consider holding new elections to be in their interest.

According to him, this is precisely why the coming days will be decisive in determining whether the political entities will manage to reach a compromise on the head of state.

Spahiu stressed that no party in Kosovo currently sees an interest in new elections and that the big question is whether they can be avoided. According to him, each side will try to pull the rope toward itself, and the rope risks snapping; if a compromise is not reached, this political confrontation could lead to a new institutional situation.

Commenting on Kurti’s position regarding a possible agreement, Spahiu said that the acting prime minister is also open to a consensus candidate from outside the political parties.

According to him, Kurti is ready to accept a consensus nonpartisan figure who does not have an independent vision, so that he can simultaneously be both prime minister and de facto president.

Spahiu added that the issue of the president has now become an important point in negotiations between the parties, while the time available for an agreement is running out.

The 60-day deadline for electing Kosovo’s president began on August 8, 2026, following developments related to the constitution of the Assembly. Under this deadline, the process must be completed by October 6, 2026.

If the political parties fail to reach an agreement on the president within the constitutional deadline, the country could face another political and institutional development, making the coming days crucial for reaching a compromise.
