Video/ 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Mexico, Buildings Sway Violently and Residents Panic

Mexico’s western coast was struck today by a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

Initial data show that the epicentre of the tremor was about 71 kilometres southwest of Puerto Madero, in the state of Chiapas. The focal depth was estimated at around 10 kilometres.

Following the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) warned that coastal areas within 300 kilometres of the epicentre could be affected by tsunami waves.

The tremors were also felt in neighbouring Guatemala and El Salvador. In Guatemala City, buildings swayed violently, forcing residents to quickly take to the streets. Local media published footage of the evacuation of a government building.

Videos circulating on social media show buildings swaying strongly during the earthquake. Some appear to be “jumping” due to the intensity of the tremors.

So far, authorities have not reported any casualties or significant material damage. Emergency services continue to monitor the situation.
