They have been staying in the square since the end of May, saying they are determined not to leave until Prime Minister Rama resigns—one of their five non-negotiable demands.
The protesters accuse him of corruption and misgovernment, while stressing that he is treating the country like a private business. They have also filed a complaint against him with SPAK, calling for an investigation into the “Albanian Files” book.
“Edi Rama, resign,” “Rama in prison, Berisha in prison,” “Arrest Rama, arrest Belinda,” and “Your time is up” are some of the chants that have now become a refrain.
The civic movement initially began over opposition to the project in the protected area of Zvërnec, but it has since taken on broader dimensions as citizens call for Rama’s departure.
