Preliminary data show that the flames broke out at 15:45 local time in the area known as Selinia, spreading throughout the area within minutes.
The fire has engulfed a pine forest, while several homes have also reportedly caught fire.
Because of the limited number of roads and major traffic difficulties, residents are being evacuated amid panic. Civil protection authorities have urged them to leave the area.
Numerous forces have been deployed in the firefighting operation, supported by firefighting planes and helicopters, as well as military aircraft, since the country’s largest naval base is located there.
According to police, efforts are continuing to identify the two victims, who are men aged between 45 and 60.
