A worrying episode occurred today in the Gulf of Aden, drawing attention back to the dangers that continue to threaten one of the world’s main maritime transport arteries.
Based on a notice from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the captain of a tanker reported that six speedboats gave chase to the vessel while transiting the area.

One of the suspected craft managed to close the distance to just 900 meters off the ship’s starboard side. Faced with this threatening maneuver, the armed security team (AST) on board responded by firing warning shots into the air, causing the craft to speed away. The other five speedboats observed the scene from about one nautical mile away without getting involved.
Investigations to clarify the circumstances have begun immediately, while preliminarily no injuries or damage to the tanker’s structure are reported.
Maritime security company EOS Marine has assessed this report as highly credible and has urged all commercial vessels navigating in this region to maintain heightened vigilance.
Among the instructions for crews are continuous monitoring with visual and electronic means, prompt reporting of any unusual behavior to relevant authorities, and keeping armed security teams in full operational readiness.
The incident coincides with a strained geopolitical climate in the Middle East, where ship operators are closely monitoring any developments affecting navigational safety.
Although the presence of small fishing boats and other local craft is common in the Gulf of Aden, specialists warn that any unsafe approach must be taken with the utmost seriousness, as the line between routine maritime activity and a real threat is often difficult to distinguish.
