The death of Jovica Ilievski activates legal procedures in Brvenica: acting mayor appointed and path opened for early elections

Jovica Ilievski, the mayor of the Municipality of Brvenica, died yesterday. Following this loss, legislation in North Macedonia clearly sets out the administrative procedures that must be followed so that the functioning of institutions is not hindered.

As soon as the days of mourning are over, the Council of the Municipality of Brvenica is expected to convene an extraordinary meeting. Based on the Law on Local Self-Government, municipal councillors must elect by a majority vote one of the Council members, who will temporarily perform the function of mayor of the municipality.

The duty of this acting official will be to temporarily run the municipality, so that services for citizens, administrative payments, and projects in the field continue without interruption.

At the same time, the procedure for calling early elections will also begin.

Since the mandate of the late mayor was interrupted during a period when the law requires new elections to be held, following official notification from the Ministry of Local Self-Government and the Government, the Speaker of Parliament must call early local elections only for the Municipality of Brvenica.

These elections will be organized by the SEC, while the citizens of Brvenica will elect the new mayor, who will receive a legitimate mandate to lead the municipality.
