According to Bardhi, this action constitutes a serious legal violation and undermines the functioning of democratic institutions. He stressed that, by virtue of their office, MPs have the right to exercise parliamentary oversight and supervise the activities of state institutions.
“After the criminal violence against the young men and women who are protesting, now it was the opposition MPs’ turn.
The violence used by State Police officers against members of the Parliament of Albania is a thuggish act, unworthy of people wearing the state uniform. Every officer who uses violence against an MP while they are performing their duties seriously violates the law and undermines the functioning of democratic institutions.
The status of MPs and the powers established by the legislation in force give them the right to exercise parliamentary oversight, verify respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms, and supervise the activities of state institutions, in accordance with the law. MPs have the right to enter any state institution.
The police uniform cannot be used as a shield for illegality, nor as a reason to justify violence. This is not the State Police, but the Police of Edi Rama’s corrupt and criminalized government,” Bardhi declared.
