The message was addressed to participants in a symposium held to mark the 10th anniversary of Amoris laetitia, written by his predecessor, Pope Francis. The head of the Catholic Church thanked the faithful for their prayers and devotion.
“As you know, I have not been able to be with you in recent days,” the Holy Father wrote.
The Pope described the exchange of experiences and attentive listening among participants as a gift to the entire Church. He concluded by asking the faithful to continue praying for him, adding that he is praying for them as well.
According to information released by the medical team overseeing his condition, the Pope has been diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, one of the most common forms of lung cancer.
The surgery in Rome lasted about 90 minutes, during which doctors removed the lower lobe of one of his lungs.
Doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora said the Pope’s recovery was progressing as expected. He has walked around his hospital room and eaten breakfast and lunch.
Over the weekend, the Pope informed the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square about the planned surgery, saying the mass in his lung had been detected at an early stage.
To focus on treatment and recovery, Pope Leo XIV has canceled all public appearances through October 20.
However, he is expected to travel to South America next month for an extended visit, which will depend on his health and his doctors’ recommendations.
