Former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianji strongly criticized the party’s approach to opposition politics and accused Sali Berisha of acting as a “crutch” for Prime Minister Edi Rama, helping him remain in power.

According to Salianji, recent developments in the country called for ongoing protests and the mobilization of citizens, not opposition representatives’ trips to Strasbourg.
He said the opposition should have mobilized international actors and organized protests both in the morning and in the afternoon. Salianji also criticized the protest in Parliament, where, he said, MPs stood up and shouted “Hey, Peleshi,” while the country was facing a worsening state of affairs. He described the trips to Strasbourg as vacations.
Salianji described Berisha as a political liability for the DP and an obstacle to removing Rama from power. He said he recognized the former prime minister’s merits, but insisted that his continued leadership of the Democratic Party politically benefits the prime minister.
“Berisha is a political liability for the DP. Although I recognize his merits, he is the obstacle keeping Rama in power. Without him, Rama would fall within two months,” Salianji said.
