Two robotic-assisted gynecological surgeries were successfully performed on the same day at Acibadem Sistina Clinical Hospital. This is the first time such procedures have been carried out at the hospital and in the country. As the only robotic surgery center in North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania, Acibadem Sistina is expanding the use of this technology across various surgical specialties, creating new opportunities for more modern and precise treatments.

The procedures were performed by a gynecological team led by Dr. Boban Sardzhovski, a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics. The team also included Dr. Josif Gjoreski, also a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics, anesthesiologist Dr. Emilija Mirçevska, as well as nurses, technicians and other hospital support staff.
According to Dr. Sardzhovski, the patients were 40 and 30 years old, and both underwent complex procedures for different health reasons. Each patient underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy. The 40-year-old patient had a large intramural uterine fibroid that was causing heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia. She underwent removal of the uterus and both fallopian tubes, while her ovaries and their hormonal function were preserved.
The 30-year-old patient, who had previously been diagnosed with a malignant ovarian condition, underwent removal of the uterus, left ovary and fallopian tube. Bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy was also performed during the operation, involving the removal of lymph nodes in the pelvis. This procedure is used to determine the stage of the disease and plan subsequent oncological treatment, Dr. Sardzhovski explained.
Both patients are in good health. The operations were completed successfully with minimal blood loss, and the patients began walking on the first day after the procedures. Due to the minimally invasive technique and rapid recovery, they are expected to be discharged from the hospital and return home the following day.
Dr. Sardzhovski emphasized that the surgeon remains at the center of robotic surgery and controls the system from the surgical console. The technology provides three-dimensional images magnified up to 10 times, greater precision and a wider range of movement, facilitating complex procedures even in anatomically difficult-to-access areas. However, he stressed that successful outcomes depend on the experience and coordination of the surgical team, while the technology’s potential is realized through the knowledge and cooperation of all its members.
The installation of the robotic system at Acibadem Sistina Clinical Hospital is more than a technological development: it opens a new chapter in modern surgical practice.
