Trump’s presence at the NATO Summit comes at a time when debates continue over the future of the alliance, after the US administration previously raised the possibility of reviewing the role and commitment of the United States within NATO.
Turkey and the F-35 fighter jet program have also been at the center of discussions. Washington has considered the possibility of Ankara rejoining the program, even though Turkey uses the Russian S-400 air defense systems, an issue that has drawn objections from some Republican figures and from Israel.
During his visit to Ankara, Trump is also expected to hold meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
