Tirana Municipality has approved a decision to name Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi “Honorary Citizens” of the Albanian capital.

The initiative was announced by Mayor Erion Veliaj, several days after the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague handed down sentences against the four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). Veliaj said he would present the proposal to the Tirana Municipal Council and called on other Albanian municipalities to take similar steps.
The proposal was put to a vote and approved by the Tirana Municipal Council, becoming an official municipal decision.
“As of today, at the proposal of Mayor Erion Veliaj, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi are named ‘Honorary Citizens’ of Tirana. The decision was unanimously approved by the Tirana Municipal Council in recognition of their contribution and role in Kosovo’s history and in the KLA’s war,” Tirana Municipality said in a statement.
According to the municipality, the honor is a mark of gratitude for the former KLA leaders’ historic contribution to Kosovo’s path to freedom and statehood.
