The Ministry of Health has asked the State Sanitary and Health Inspectorate to expand its inspection into the case of Iva Mihaillova to include the health institutions where she received certain medical services in 2025 and 2026. Health Minister Sasho Klekovski announced today that a commission will also be set up to conduct professional oversight of the medical aspects of the patient’s treatment.

Klekovski made the remarks while answering journalists’ questions after the presentation of a project to purchase 100 new ambulances. He said that although he had met with his Bulgarian counterpart in Sofia the previous day, where they also discussed those injured in Kočani, both sides had tacitly agreed that Mihaillova’s case was a matter for the justice system.
“We essentially reached a tacit agreement that Iva’s case is not a health matter, but one for the justice system, because the person is a fugitive from justice and is subject to an international arrest warrant. Since this is a matter for the justice system, not health care, we did not discuss it,” Klekovski said.
Speaking about the State Sanitary and Health Inspectorate’s report on Professor Ivan Barbov and Mihaillova’s treatment, the minister said the inspection had found violations. He added that a professional review had been requested of the medical treatment.
“I also requested that the Inspectorate’s report be supplemented. It was initiated by the Neurology Clinic, but it did not cover the full course of care and the medical procedures Iva underwent at health institutions in Macedonia. I also asked that the inspection be extended to a private health institution where she received treatment in the meantime, so that we can have a complete recommendation. Violations have already been identified at this stage, and professional oversight of the medical part of the report has been requested,” Klekovski said.
Prime Minister Hristian Mickoski, who attended the event where the project to supply 100 new ambulances was presented, said that the Bulgarian interior minister’s insulting remark should not be commented on.
“Look, I have a response, but I think some individuals do not deserve to be in the spotlight. I think this kind of showbiz spectacle we are seeing here today, tied to the folklore surrounding their presidential elections, does not merit comment. I think you in the media should also ignore such statements by certain individuals,” Mickoski said.
Regarding those injured in Kočani, Klekovski said that he and the working group had prepared plans that are expected to be made public soon.
