J.R. Smith, a former NBA champion, was arrested on Monday, September 28, in Texas after being charged with domestic violence.
According to information published on the Hunt County Jail website, the 41-year-old is accused of assault causing bodily injury. Smith is particularly known for his spells with the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers.

The arrest was carried out by the Royse City Police Department. Officers stopped him on Interstate 30 after an automatic license plate recognition system alerted them to an active arrest warrant against him.
Authorities have not made public any further details regarding the incident that led to the assault charge. Jail records showed that Smith had not yet been released.
The former basketball player has previously had legal troubles. In 2009, he served 24 days in jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving following an accident in New Jersey. In that incident, Smith failed to stop at a stop sign, and passenger Andre Bell was killed.
During his career, Smith played in nearly 1,000 NBA games. He was part of four LeBron James teams that reached the NBA Finals from 2015 to 2018.
With the Cleveland Cavaliers, Smith won the championship in 2016. In 2020, he had a limited role with the Los Angeles Lakers, the team that triumphed in the NBA Finals in Orlando.
After ending his NBA career, Smith completed his studies at North Carolina A&T State University, where he also played golf for the university team.
