A 48-year-old man from Utah has been arrested after being accused of seriously stabbing a Muslim man at a shopping centre. During questioning, the suspect openly admitted that he had targeted the victim specifically because of his religious affiliation.
The suspect, identified as Peter Michael Larsen, told investigators that his goal was to eliminate Muslim worshippers and that he had acted with premeditation. This is according to official police and prosecution records.

The incident occurred on Monday at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah. The victim, who worked at a sales kiosk, was found by law enforcement officers with deep wounds to several parts of his body and in a severe state of haemorrhaging.
Details of the attack indicate that the assailant first approached the man to ask for a glass of water and to question him about his name and religion. Imam Shuaib Dean, who leads the Islamic Centre of Utah, explained that the moment the victim turned to get the bottle of water turned into a nightmare, as Larsen began stabbing him without warning.
Fortunately, people at the shopping centre reacted without delay. Several bystanders managed to bring the attacker to the ground and restrain him, preventing him from continuing the brutality until police units arrived at the scene.
The victim is currently fighting for his life in hospital in critical condition. According to a fundraising campaign launched by a close friend on GoFundMe, the man suffered around 15 wounds and requires several complex operations.
Meanwhile, Larsen is in custody facing charges of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon. He is also receiving medical care for injuries sustained during the struggle with the bystanders who stopped him.
Muslim community rights organisations have strongly condemned the crime. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) described the incident as a clear example of violence fuelled by religious hatred and prejudice.
Data from civil rights groups show that anti-Islamic sentiment in the United States has escalated in recent times. This trend is seen as a consequence of anti-immigrant rhetoric, the activity of extremist groups promoting white supremacy, and continuing geopolitical unrest in the Middle East region.
