According to Nepal’s Disaster Management Authority, the death toll has reached 538. Meanwhile, Nepalese police have reported 547 fatalities. So far, the authorities have not clarified the reason for the discrepancy between the two figures, which refer to data recorded up to 3:00 p.m. local time.
The number of people reported missing stands at 977, of whom 517 are foreign nationals. Search-and-rescue efforts are focused on the worst-affected areas, while the authorities are also working to identify the missing and update data on the victims.
The Nepal Tourism Board announced that 121 foreign nationals have been rescued alive so far. Among them are two Americans, while there have been no reports of British nationals being rescued.
The sudden floods have caused considerable damage to infrastructure and left several areas of Nepal isolated, making rescue operations even more difficult.
