US President Donald Trump’s administration yesterday reaffirmed its intention to cut off Iran from “all economic resources.” Washington also warned countries that continue to “support” Tehran, while Iran said the United States would suffer “a new defeat.”

At a press conference in the US capital, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced preparations for a new wave of so-called “secondary” sanctions. The measures are expected not to target Iran alone, but also its trading partners in areas such as gold, technology, digital resources, aviation and maritime transport.
Bessent did not give a date for when the sanctions would take effect, nor did he identify the countries that could be targeted by Washington. China, the world’s second-largest economy, could be among them, as it imports large quantities of oil from Iran.
“Iran faces a very clear choice between only two possible paths: complete isolation or a return to normality and the possibility of reintegration into the global economy,” Bessent said.
The American message was also extended to other countries around the world. According to Bessent, states that do not join the US measures must either help “isolate Iran” or face sanctions themselves, including expulsion from the “dollar system.”
“We will hold everyone accountable” if they dare oppose the plan for the “economic strangulation of the regime,” Scott Bessent stressed, adding that “no one should test our resolve.”
