Smoke from Canadian Wildfires Raises Alarm in New York Ahead of World Cup Final

The World Cup final in the New York area could face the consequences of the dense layer of smoke that has engulfed the region as a result of numerous wildfires in Canada. The main hope for an improvement in the situation is the rain forecast for Saturday.

However, the rain is expected to only partially ease the pollution rather than eliminate it completely. The situation worsened overnight, while authorities warned that air quality has fallen to levels dangerous to health.

A statement released in the early hours of Friday said that “the situation has deteriorated compared with a day earlier, and everyone may experience health effects, while the consequences for the most sensitive groups could be serious.”

The problem is mainly linked to fine PM2.5 particles, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream. The air quality index reached 185, around 20 times worse than the usual level, while residents have been advised to wear protective masks when going outdoors.

Air quality is measured on a scale from 0 to 500. Values above 100 are considered harmful for sensitive groups, those above 150 pose a risk to the entire population, while levels exceeding 200 are classified as highly dangerous.

At this point, the air in New York poses a risk to all residents. The situation could particularly affect outdoor sporting activities, including training sessions for the finalist teams and the legends match scheduled ahead of the grand final.
