A statement by Prime Minister Edi Rama, made when he was leading the opposition, is circulating on social media. It is highly relevant to the current political reality, at a time when the government is facing numerous criticisms and, for 38 days, thousands of citizens have been protesting and demanding Rama’s removal.
In that statement, Rama said that responsibility for respecting the “contract with the people” lies with the government and that citizens have the right to remove it if that contract is violated.

“The people have a contract with those who govern, and it is those who govern who must answer, one by one, for every point of the contract that has been violated. This government has torn up the contract with the people and for that reason the people must cast it out,” Rama said at the time.
But why is Rama not standing by his own words? Why is the prime minister giving no answer for the broken contract with the citizens, and why is the head of government not listening to the people, who are demanding that his government be cast out?
What we can see is that his rhetoric as opposition leader differs from the way he acts today as prime minister.
