Tabaku opposed the arrests, saying that the people she had met had neither committed violence nor struck any object. According to her, they had intervened to protect other protesters from violence carried out by the police.
The Democratic MP emphasized that their actions had been intended to protect the citizens who were protesting. She linked their detention to the way institutions treat citizens who raise their voices and oppose the government.
According to Tabaku, the arrests are evidence of a system that is strong with the weak and weak with the strong. In her assessment, the case reflects a double standard, in which citizens face the force of the state, while the system appears weak when confronted with the powerful.
Her morning visit to the Security Block follows Tabaku’s meeting with Kevin at the hospital last night. After that meeting, the MP had denounced the visible signs of what she described as inhumane treatment and had spoken out against violence against young people at the protest.
