The surprise return of Iva Mihailova to Bulgaria has once again heightened tensions between Skopje and Sofia. Macedonia announced that it would take the case to the European Union and the Council of Europe, describing the incident as the escape of a person under investigation. Part of Bulgaria’s political establishment continues to support Mihailova’s departure, even though she appears to have left the country illegally.

“For years, Skopje has waged smear campaigns against Bulgaria and spread falsehoods,” declared Krasimir Karakachanov, leader of Bulgaria’s OBRM-BND.
According to him, Macedonia’s government is not being honest, while he places his trust in Mihailova’s statements.
“The most important thing is that the child, who needs immediate medical care, is finally at Pirogov. For more than a year, the authorities in Skopje did everything to damage the child’s health and deny it the proper medical treatment,” he said. Karakachanov added that since Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski took over the leadership of Macedonia, relations between the two countries have not moved toward overcoming the problems that have accumulated. /Telegrafi/
