The first American pope, who has warned about the dangers of artificial intelligence since taking office, also openly criticized technology leaders who believe that safeguards are not necessary for this technology.
“I truly believe that the concerns raised by many experts about artificial intelligence should be taken seriously,” he told reporters during the flight back to Rome after completing a four-day tour of France.
“I do not think this is fake news, as some have said,” he added.
Last week, during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Trump described fears that humanity is at risk from artificial intelligence as a “hoax.”
The pope also said that on the same day he had read that the head of semiconductor chip giant Nvidia had mentioned that there might be a way to introduce safeguards into some artificial intelligence models. However, he expressed skepticism, stressing: “This is the same person who says there should be no restrictions and no government regulations.”
This month, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CBS News that he shares Trump’s view that concerns about artificial intelligence are exaggerated.
