Von der Leyen: Trade deficit with China reaches 1 billion euros per day, the relationship is unsustainable

The trade gap between the European Union and China has reached around 1 billion euros every day, a level that, according to Ursula von der Leyen, cannot continue further. The European Commission President described the current relationship as “unsustainable” and stressed the necessity of a rebalancing.

“Some say China’s second shock is approaching, but it is already here,” von der Leyen said, referring to the pressure that Chinese competition is exerting on the EU economy. According to her, the consequences are visible in many communities and factories across member states, increasing the risk of deindustrialization of Europe’s industrial regions.

“This is unsustainable,” she emphasized, adding that the EU will use all instruments at its disposal to correct this imbalance.

Another point she raised was the need to diversify sources of critical raw materials, with the aim of reducing dependence on a limited number of suppliers.

These statements come in a context where EU-China economic ties are at the center of debates over competition, import flows, and the European industry’s reliance on the Chinese market.
