Law enforcement confirmed to CNN that two police officers are among the wounded, but no additional details about the circumstances of the incident have been released so far.
Hennepin County Medical Center announced that after the shooting it received six patients, one of whom did not survive their injuries. Authorities urged residents to stay away from the area near 15 East Grant Street, where the attack occurred.
At approximately 5:45 p.m. local time, dozens of police cars and officers arrived and cordoned off the area. SWAT units and emergency teams were also seen at the scene. The presence of authorities continued until around 6:30 p.m., as the situation was described as calm.
The affected area includes an apartment building, the Minneapolis Convention Center, several hotels and a hospital. As a precaution, the University of St. Thomas, whose campus is nearby, placed its building on lockdown. A spokesperson for the institution described it as “an additional safety measure.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said his public safety team is handling the situation and that state representatives are on the ground.
In a message posted later, Walz expressed his gratitude: “I thank the law enforcement officers who are actively working to protect our fellow citizens in downtown Minneapolis this afternoon. Minnesota is praying for our officers.”
