On Monday, in a post on social media, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that 20 schools in Tirana now have smart cameras, stressing that the development is part of the commitment made after the killing of 14-year-old Martin Cani near a school.

Rama once again brought attention to the tragic incident that shocked the entire country. According to him, the cameras in the area had not been sufficient to help fully clarify what had happened.
Rama also said that the tragedy at a school in Tirana had made it essential to strengthen security through advanced technology and that, following the incident, he had undertaken to bring this level of technology to Albania.
The first phase of the project has begun in the capital, where 20 schools have been equipped with cameras that, according to the prime minister, can identify and signal situations posing a risk in real time.
The new equipment has been installed at the same locations where the previous cameras were placed. Rama explained that the main difference lies in the functionality of the new technology, which is not limited solely to recording footage.
The smart cameras immediately notify the school administration, security personnel and, when necessary, the State Police.
According to Rama, this gives institutions the opportunity to receive the alert more quickly, understand the nature of the situation and respond without delay.
The prime minister stressed that equipping 20 schools in Tirana represents only the beginning of the process. The project is expected to gradually extend to other schools across the country.
Rama underlined that the commitment made after the tragedy will be implemented step by step, school by school, with the aim of putting technology at the service of people and ensuring that children’s safety remains the top priority.
“When a terrible tragedy at a school in Tirana left the whole of Albania holding its breath, the cameras were not able to help us sufficiently understand the dynamics of that incident in full,” Rama wrote.
“At that time, I made a commitment, and we will bring to Albania the highest level of technology to strengthen security in schools like never before.
Today, that commitment has begun to become a reality. In Tirana, we have the first 20 schools equipped with smart cameras, which are an extraordinarily capable tool in the hands of school administrators, security personnel and, of course, parents themselves.
These cameras have been installed, and will be installed, in the same places where the old ones were, but unlike the old cameras, they see and signal in real time to the administration, security personnel or the State Police themselves, helping them quickly pick up the alert, understand much better what is happening and intervene without wasting time.
These 20 schools are only the vanguard of the process. We will make the commitment made after that tragedy a reality, school by school, with technology serving people and children’s safety above all else.”
