The decision was announced after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa failed. In a social media post, Trump clarified that goods manufactured in the United States would not be subject to these tariffs.
“If it is made in the United States, the tariffs will be zero. Canada will no longer be treated as a state!” the US president wrote.
Trump accused Canada of unfairly benefiting from trade relations with the United States for years. He said tariffs imposed by Ottawa on US farmers and agricultural products had harmed US interests.
“Canada has been robbing the United States of America for years,” he said, describing the situation as “unsustainable.”
The US president continued to criticize Ottawa, stressing that Canada depends far more on trade with the US than the United States does on Canadian trade.
“We don’t need Canada. Canada needs us,” Donald Trump said.
