During an interview with public broadcaster ARD, the German chancellor ruled out reducing the defense budget or scaling back new weapons projects, even though such a move could leave citizens with more financial leeway.
“What good is even the best financial support for parents if we lose our freedom and peace in Europe is put at risk?” Merz said. According to the head of government, protecting peace and freedom must be the “top priority,” because only these guarantees can provide the conditions needed for the country’s economic development.
Criticizing previous governments, the chancellor said Germany must address the shortcomings that have accumulated in the defense sector over the past 15 years. “The Bundeswehr is not where it needs to be. We must be able to defend ourselves in Germany,” he said. However, Merz again stressed that the military’s modernization must be carried out more efficiently and at a lower cost.
As evidence that military equipment can be produced more cost-effectively, Merz pointed to cooperation with Ukraine. He was also asked about the August 4 incident at Leipzig Airport, where an explosive-laden drone crashed near Ukrainian transport aircraft. Its origin remains unclear.
The chancellor said the federal government would respond “in the coming days.” He added that the response would be coordinated with the European Union and NATO partners.
