Serbian elections: CeSID releases preliminary results showing Student List with 52.1% of the vote, ahead of Vučić’s party on 39.3%

The Student List, “Students Win,” has won Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections. According to preliminary results released by election-monitoring organization CeSID, the Student List received 52.1% of the vote, ahead of Aleksandar Vučić’s party, which secured 39.3%.

A preliminary projection of parliamentary seats also shows a clear lead for the students, who are expected to hold an absolute majority in Serbia’s new parliament. The Student List is projected to win 138 of the 250 seats, while Vučić’s list is projected to take 104.

The results follow a statement by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who conceded defeat, saying preliminary figures showed a student victory. Earlier, Vučić said the Student List was expected to secure between 135 and 140 seats, while his political group would win around 105.

“We don’t have the final results. Many will be surprised, and you will understand how much some people lied and what they made up. I want to inform you that it is clear from the preliminary data that we lost these elections. The Student List won; they will have between 135 and 140 seats, and we have around 105. No one else entered parliament. Actually, yes, the Hungarians of Vojvodina got in with 3 seats, and the Albanians with one, and I mean SDA—don’t take my word for it. So, we have around 1,720,000. They have around 2,200,000,” Vučić said.

After the preliminary results were released, hundreds of people took to the streets of Belgrade to celebrate. Flares were lit and car horns sounded in the Serbian capital, while candidates and supporters at Student List headquarters chanted “Victory.” The snap parliamentary elections were held on Sunday, October 25, with 18 electoral lists taking part.
