Donald Trump declared that the United States would remove the 10% tariff currently imposed on Irish whiskey.

The announcement was made on Sunday during the trophy presentation ceremony following the conclusion of the Irish Open tournament, which was held in Ireland. The U.S. president said he had been asked about the issue repeatedly, including by several golfers.
“Everyone was pestering me to do it,” Trump said, adding: “And I said: ‘On behalf of the United States of America, I will remove the tariffs on Irish whiskey.’”
Irish whiskey is currently subject to the standard tariff that the Trump administration has imposed on most imports from the European Union. In July, the tariff was reduced from 15% to 10%.
Spectators watching the tournament greeted the statement with cheers and whistles.
The Irish Whiskey Association called in May for the tariff to be removed. According to the association, such a measure would help U.S. companies that market Irish products and reduce uncertainty for consumers.
Details regarding when the tariff removal will begin to take effect have not yet been made public.
The decision follows Trump’s earlier removal of tariffs on British whiskey, including Scotch and drinks produced in Northern Ireland.
