During a conversation with journalists on his way to Texas, the president emphasized that Iran, in his view, will no longer have the capacity to resist and consequently the fighting will end immediately after November 3.
He also predicted a significant drop in oil prices, which according to him will happen right after the elections. These statements come at a time when oil is trading around $100 per barrel, a level that has heightened anxiety about the costs of derivatives, transportation, and other goods in the American market.
Among the reasons Trump gave for the conflict was the necessity to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Although Tehran consistently rejects this accusation, the American president also added the unsubstantiated claim that Iran is seeking to interfere in US domestic politics.
Nevertheless, calls to end the fighting are strengthening within the Republican camp itself, driven by the effects of rising gasoline prices and consequences for the economy, which are eroding support for the president.
Clashes have intensified recently, with the US military reporting strikes on 5 oil tankers linked to Tehran, at the same time that Iran launched attacks against two American warships and several tankers in the Strait of Hormuz area.
On the other hand, Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, have struck targets in Saudi Arabia, including oil infrastructure.
Now in its seventh month, this conflict has escalated uncertainty in international markets and is fueling concern that expensive energy could lead to higher interest rates in the US.
The election date is November 3, a key challenge for Republicans who risk losing their majority in Congress.
