Torrential rains and floods that have swept Bangladesh in recent days have caused the deaths of at least 51 people and affected more than a million others.
Most of the fatalities were recorded in the Cox’s Bazar district, home to the world’s largest Rohingya refugee camp. In this area, last week, raging waters engulfed a school, claiming the lives of several students and a teacher.

In many regions of the country, including the capital Dhaka, heavy rainfall has caused flooding and landslides. Numerous roads in the metropolis are still underwater, completely blocking traffic.
Emergency forces have relocated residents from the most threatened areas, set up reception centers for thousands of displaced people, and canceled the school exam season.
Experts emphasize that, although Bangladesh regularly experiences flooding during the monsoon season, climate change is making these rainfall episodes more violent and more frequent. While in the southeast the situation is expected to normalize, officials warn that the north and northeast of the country remain under threat from new floods.
