The US Department of State described the event as “catastrophic” and said Washington was closely monitoring the situation, expressing its readiness to assist the Colombian authorities.
The death and injury toll continues to change. The latest figures indicate that at least 130 people have lost their lives and 500 have been injured.
Meanwhile, search-and-rescue teams are working in the affected areas, while authorities warn that the death toll could rise, as other people are believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
Pereira, along with other cities in western Colombia, is among the hardest-hit areas. Extensive damage has been reported to buildings, roads, hospitals and airports.
