Sudeten Germans Day commemorated in Brno, with expulsions and displacement after World War II in focus

By Arcangelo Binetti, Brno/ An event dedicated to Sudeten Germans Day was held in Brno, Czechia.

The traditional gathering, in its 76th edition, was regarded by many attendees as an event of historical significance. At the same time, it highlighted that the memory of war, expulsions and forced population movements remains politically sensitive even more than eighty years after the end of World War II.

Even before the event began, it had attracted the attention of Czech and German media. Some described it as a sign of dialogue and reconciliation, while others expressed concern that history could be used for political purposes.

According to reports, the organization did not proceed entirely without difficulties. Some participants expressed dissatisfaction with the way the fairgrounds had been arranged. They said the directions for entrances and access to the complex were not always clear, while many visitors were forced to walk for a long time in the summer heat to find the correct entrance. In the early morning hours, some stands were still being prepared.

Nevertheless, the presence and work of the participating associations and organizations were clearly noticeable. The exhibitions reflected various regions, cultural initiatives and historical issues, offering a broad picture of Sudeten German identity and history.

Particular interest was sparked by the activities of social democratic organizations from Austria and Czechia. Political and intellectual figures who had been active before World War II and were later forced into exile because of Nazism and political persecution were commemorated there.

One of the main topics was the period that followed the end of the war. On the basis of the Beneš Decrees and following the decisions of the victorious powers, millions of Germans were expelled or forced to leave Czechoslovakia. At the same time, there were also German-speaking families who chose to remain and contribute to the reconstruction of postwar society.

These events continue to have contested interpretations in politics even today. Some groups continue to raise the issue of confiscations and historical injustices, while others draw attention to the risk of the political use of the past. Many participants said that achieving complete historical justice is almost impossible and that what matters most is drawing lessons from history in order to build the future.

According to the discussions, the history of the Sudeten Germans is not an isolated case. In many parts of Europe, wars, border changes and political transformations brought large-scale expulsions and ethnic clashes.

Similar developments in Istria and Dalmatia after World War II were also mentioned as examples. After these territories passed from Italy to Yugoslavia, hundreds of thousands of Italians left or lost their homeland. The reasons were many: political persecution, retaliatory measures, economic pressure and the major changes brought by the new postwar order. Even today, in some areas of Istria, Italian-speaking communities live on and preserve this historical heritage.

Likewise, the issue of Chameria continues to remain an open wound in relations between Albanians and Greeks. After World War II, thousands of मुस्लिम Albanian Muslims were expelled from the region. Albanian organizations speak of expulsions and serious human rights violations, while the Greek side defends the position that parts of this community had collaborated with the occupiers during the war. A shared historical interpretation has still not been reached.

Despite the differences that exist between these cases, they also share common features: war, occupation, collaboration with occupiers, revenge and expulsion. The consequences of these processes continue to affect collective memory to this day.

As early as Friday, during the so-called March of Peace, several incidents were recorded. Participants reported graffiti with Nazi symbols and provocative banners. Although they were considered isolated cases, for many visitors they served as a reminder that historical education and the protection of democratic values remain necessary.

However, the event itself proceeded peacefully. “The atmosphere was heated, but only because of the weather and the large number of people,” one participant said jokingly.

For the vast majority of those present, the politics of the day was not the main issue. More important to them was how historical memory and cultural identity can be preserved without opening new conflicts.

The spokesman for the Sudeten German ethnic group and federal chairman of the Sudeten German Association, Bernd Posselt, described the event as a “historic moment.” In his speech, he underlined the importance of a strong democratic center and warned against extremism from every side of the political spectrum.

In conclusion, many of the participants left with a positive impression. The meetings, discussions and exchanges of views in Brno showed that, although the past cannot be changed, the memory of it can serve as a foundation for a more peaceful future.

In a European Union that aims to present itself as united and resilient in the face of external challenges, such events show how important an honest reckoning with history is. Borders have shifted, states have been created or have disappeared, languages and identities have been transformed, but the experiences of expulsion, loss and starting over continue to connect many regions of Europe even today.
