Following the protest held the previous day in Tirana, the European Democrats expressed concern over allegations by anti-torture organizations regarding excessive force, ill-treatment and the arbitrary detention of protesters.
The group unequivocally condemned violence against police officers and women. However, it stressed that violence cannot justify abuse or torture by the state.

The European Democrats called on Edi Rama’s government to ensure independent investigations into the allegations, hold those responsible for the violations accountable, and guarantee that police use proportionate force when managing protests.
According to them, respect for human rights and the prohibition of torture are principles that must be upheld in all circumstances.
In their full statement, they said that anti-torture organizations had raised serious allegations of excessive violence, ill-treatment and arbitrary detentions during protests in Albania. “Torture has no place in Europe,” the statement concluded.
