International Day of the Disappeared: 1,577 People Still Missing from the War in Kosovo

August 30 is observed as the International Day of the Disappeared.

After the end of the war in Kosovo in 1999, the number of missing persons stood at around 6,500.

Twenty-seven years after the end of the war, data from the Institute of Crimes Committed During the War in Kosovo show that 1,577 people continue to be listed as missing from the 1998–1999 war, KosovaPress reports.

To mark the day, Acting President Albulena Haxhiu will pay tribute at the Monument to Missing Persons in Pristina. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.
