On Sunday, a powerful storm swept through Bucharest and 20 other counties in Romania, leaving one person dead and causing major damage to homes, vehicles and infrastructure.
According to Romania’s emergency authorities, nearly 2,000 calls for help were reported from the capital alone. Heavy rain and strong winds caused flooding in several parts of Bucharest, including at some metro stations.

In the rest of the country, the storm hit around 60 towns and villages. One person lost their life after a tree fell onto the vehicle they were driving.
Police and fire services intervened in several counties to manage the situation, while dozens of residents were evacuated from flooded homes.
The storm came after an intense heatwave that had affected the country over the previous two days. In some parts of Romania, temperatures had exceeded 40 degrees Celsius before weather conditions changed suddenly.
