The powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela has led to an even heavier death toll. At least 164 people have lost their lives, while another 971 have been confirmed injured, Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced.
Rodríguez said that after the two main shocks, at least 30 aftershocks were recorded, complicating the work of rescue teams and keeping the population on alert.

Authorities have warned that the number of victims could rise even further, as search-and-rescue teams continue operations in areas where many buildings have collapsed or suffered severe damage.
The acting president also said that Venezuela is working with the United Nations to deploy rescue teams. At the same time, work is also under way to establish an initial $200 million fund for reconstruction.
She urged citizens to remain calm and united, stressing that they should stay in their homes only if the structures are safe.
At the same time, authorities are continuing inspections of damaged buildings, while fears remain that the tragic toll could worsen in the coming hours.
