The objective of both sides is for a final agreement to be reached within 60 days. The working groups are expected to deal, among other things, with Iran’s nuclear program and the Western sanctions imposed on the country.
Meanwhile, a communication channel has also been set up between the sides, with the aim of avoiding misunderstandings or incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as addressing other issues. Among the topics expected to be treated as a priority are reopening the Strait of Hormuz to traffic, through which around 20 percent of the world’s fuel contingent passes, the Iranian nuclear program, and Western sanctions against the country. However, other issues remain for peace to be established, foremost among them recognition of the State of Israel and Iran’s abandonment of support for radical elements in the region.
The statement also says that, alongside the agreements to establish working groups, a kind of body will be created to resolve the conflict in cooperation with Lebanon, with the aim of putting an end to the fighting in that country.
In Lebanon, Israel and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia have been involved in fighting against each other.
On Sunday, the American and Iranian delegations began talks on a lasting peace solution at a luxury hotel on Mount Bürgenstock in the Swiss Alps. The first round of these meetings ended during the night between Sunday and Monday. According to the mediator, the talks will continue throughout this week.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi congratulated Pakistan and Qatar for their mediating role. On the X platform, Araghchi said that “considerable progress” had been achieved.
So far, the United States has not yet commented on the first day of the talks, but Vice President JD Vance and other officials are expected to present their positions soon. /DW
