Jennifer Barkas, 48, and her daughter Sheila Reed, 20, died after a bear attack in British Columbia, Canada.
According to their family, they were reported missing on Sunday, November 1, when they did not return from a short evening walk. Their remains were found on a trail on Tuesday. Initial evidence indicates that a wild animal was involved, but the possibility that more than one animal was involved has not been ruled out.

If it is determined that a bear killed Jennifer and Sheila, it will be put down under current regulations. In Canada, federal law classifies grizzly bears as a species “of concern.” An estimated 10,000 to 13,000 grizzly bears live in British Columbia.
The ministry says encounters between bears and people are “relatively rare,” except when the animals are startled or are protecting their cubs or food. However, British Columbia has recorded several attacks in recent years.
In October 2025, a grizzly bear attacked two hikers in the Mount McGregor area. A month later, another attack on a school group left 11 people injured.
