Falling water levels at Fierza reveal the ruins of Old Kukës

The ruins of Old Kukës have once again emerged above the surface of Lake Fierza due to the low water level. The latest rainfall has not changed the lake’s elevation.

The latest data show that the water level is 260 meters above sea level, while inflows are less than 45 cubic meters of water per second.

The Fierza Hydropower Plant remains out of operation, as the water level in the lake has fallen significantly. Meanwhile, the hydrological situation remains unchanged.

The lake’s elevation depends on rainfall, river inflows and the way water reserves are managed. For this reason, developments in hydrological conditions over the coming days will be decisive for the situation in the Drin cascade and for the possibility of bringing the Fierza Hydropower Plant back into operation.

Extended periods of low rainfall, such as the current one, have caused a considerable drop in the water level. This situation limits electricity production and also raises concerns about water supplies.

While high inflows would help strengthen water reserves and increase the country’s hydropower capacity, the withdrawal of water causes not only historical consequences but also affects aquatic life.

Within the first ten months of this year, the ruins of Old Kukës have become visible above the water on two occasions.

The prolonged drought, together with the use of water to generate electricity, has led to a sharp drop in the level of Lake Kukës, which serves as a reservoir for the Fierza Hydropower Plant.
