YouGov poll: Support for King Charles declines, William and Catherine lead in popularity

Support for King Charles has fallen to its lowest level since September 2022, when he ascended the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the sharpest decline recorded for him since the beginning of his reign.

The results of YouGov’s latest poll show that 58% of Britons have a positive opinion of the monarch, while 34% view him negatively.

According to data published by the British media outlet Mirror, positive support for Charles has fallen by four percentage points compared with July. Meanwhile, the percentage of citizens with a negative perception of him has reached the highest level recorded during his reign.

This development comes as the royal family faces numerous public debates and pressures. Issues that may have affected the king’s image include his position on a possible return to Britain by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as the scandal involving his brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Further debate has been sparked by the book “Swan Song,” written by Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother. In his memoirs, he attributes a statement to Charles made after Diana’s death in 1997, claiming that the king had said the event would soon be forgotten.

Buckingham Palace responded sharply to these claims, casting doubt on Earl Spencer’s memory and judgment. However, the contents of the book are not confirmed facts.

Prince William and Princess Catherine continue to be the most popular members of the royal family. William ranks first in the poll, with 74% of Britons expressing a positive view of him, while Princess Catherine follows with 72%.

Princess Anne ranks third, with a positive rating of 68%. King Charles is supported by 58% of respondents, while 42% have a positive opinion of Queen Camilla and 45% a negative one.

The results are less favorable for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. For Harry, 29% of Britons have a positive view, while 60% view him negatively. Meghan Markle is viewed positively by just 20% of respondents, while 68% have a negative perception of her. Her net rating has fallen to -48, the lowest level recorded in this poll.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor ranks at the bottom of the list. Only 4% of respondents express a positive view of him, while 89% have a negative opinion.

Despite fluctuations in perceptions of some members of the royal family, the institution of the monarchy continues to enjoy steady support in Britain.

The poll shows that 64% of Britons want the monarchy to continue to exist, while 25% would prefer the country to have an elected head of state.

In addition, 52% of participants believe that the monarchy provides good value for money, while 44% say they feel proud of the institution.

However, attitudes vary significantly by age. Among Britons over 65, support for the monarchy stands at 81%, while among those aged 18-24 it falls to 46%. Around one-third of young people in this age group would prefer an elected head of state.

Opinion of King Charles is also divided among young people: 38% have a positive view of him, while 39% express a negative one.

The data highlight that the monarchy continues to be supported by a majority of Britons, but King Charles’s personal image is facing considerable difficulties. By contrast, Prince William and Princess Catherine remain the royal family’s most popular figures.
