Inspections by the Food and Veterinary Agency led to the confiscation of around 2 tonnes of fresh and frozen meat, as well as meat products deemed unsafe. The seized quantity will be destroyed at the Drislla landfill.
Inspections were carried out at retail outlets selling meat, meat products and processed meat in the territory of the Municipality of Radovish, while checks were also conducted on a private individual in the village of Pepelishte, Negotino. The authorities also seized 50 kilograms of meat products from this operator, including roasted meat, kulen, smoked ham and other products. According to the Food and Veterinary Agency, they had no declaration of origin and had been processed and stored in unsuitable and unhygienic conditions, posing a serious risk to food safety and consumers’ health.
The smoked products, smoked ham and other meat items were sold through social media. The inspection confirmed that the producer and seller did not have the relevant authorization, while the processing and storage were carried out in unhygienic conditions.
A few days earlier, during inspections at two butcher shops in Struga and Ohrid, the Food and Veterinary Agency had confiscated and destroyed 1,000 kilograms of chicken gizzards and 55 kilograms of meat preparations containing this product. Its import and use for human consumption are prohibited.
The Agency announced that inspections will continue, with the aim of protecting citizens’ health and preventing the sale of unsafe food.
