The leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, has called for a full and independent investigation into how institutions handled the case of Arlinda Zekaj, who was murdered in Vitomiricë, Peja. He is calling for both their actions and inaction to be examined.
According to Abdixhiku, Arlinda had turned to the state for protection and, three days before her murder, had informed the Prosecution that her life was in danger. Her letter, now made public, shows that she had sought help and warned that those responsible should not wait until after her death to be held accountable.

Abdixhiku said it was unbearable to read the words of a woman asking for help while feeling powerless. He said the message affects everyone, whether a parent, sibling, child or fellow citizen.
The LDK leader called on every official and institution involved in handling Arlinda’s request to answer for what they did and for the duties they failed to fulfill. He stressed that responsibility must be assigned to specific individuals.
Abdixhiku offered his condolences to the victim’s family, saying Arlinda should have been protected while she was alive. Now, he stressed, she is owed justice.
The murder has prompted widespread public reaction and calls for institutions to be held accountable.
The Kosovo Police said the case was initially reported as domestic violence and that Arlinda was interviewed at the police station in Peja. Police later received notification that she had been found dead at her home in Vitomiricë.
Preliminary police findings suggest that her death may have been caused by blows from a hard object. The suspect, believed to be her brother-in-law, is at large. Investigations to fully establish the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
