The meeting took place at St. Sophia’s Cathedral in the center of the Ukrainian capital. Zelensky welcomed the American representatives near the site where a Russian drone had been shot down on Friday. The drone had targeted the offices of Ukraine’s security services.
Jared Kushner said the delegation from the United States hoped to see further progress in the peace negotiations. Meanwhile, Steve Witkoff said the American side was “very encouraged” by the conversation, which he described as an extremely important discussion.
Before the meeting, the Ukrainian president said that Ukraine was “ready to bring the end of the war closer.”
Kushner and Witkoff arrived in Ukraine after traveling from Moscow, where they held a three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin the previous day. However, no significant progress toward peace was reported from that conversation.
The previous negotiations, mediated by the United States, have been backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who promised during the campaign that he would end the war quickly.
On Friday, Trump indicated that the United States had a new proposal, but he provided no further details about it.
Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin’s foreign policy adviser, described Thursday’s meeting as “extremely useful.” Meanwhile, a White House official told Reuters that the next steps would be announced in the coming weeks.
